Athletic Counseling

Get the support you need to thrive.

Athletic counseling, or talk therapy for athletes and coaches, is a transformative process that provides individuals a safe and affirming space to increase self-awareness, process trauma, explore identity, and improve relationships.

Headstrong Mindset, LLC is a Colorado-based talk therapy practice that provides evidence-based, trauma-informed and LGBTQIA+ affirming psychological services to support and empower individuals.

Create the change you want to experience.

Do your emotions feel over-sized or out of control? Are you constantly feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or worried? Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, navigating a difficult life transition, or exploring your identity, you deserve a therapy space that feels safe and supportive. I utilize a mindfulness based, trauma-informed, and relationally focused approach to talk therapy that explores you as a whole person. Together we will unpack your life experiences and explore your relational patterns to help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and create the change that you want to experience in your life.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC) in the state of Colorado, I specialize in working with athletes, coaches, musicians, performers, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I am a queer therapist and former professional athlete passionate about helping people reach their potential.

I only provide clinical mental health counseling to clients based in Colorado. If you’re interested working together, please schedule a free 15-minute consultation to get started.

What is the length & format of individual counseling sessions?

All individual counseling appointments are held virtually over Telehealth using HIPAA-compliant video. The length of individual sessions last 50 minutes and typically takes place either once a week or biweekly. We will work together to determine the frequency of sessions and create a treatment plan that aligns with your personal therapy goals.

Can I access individual counseling if I live outside the state of Colorado?

Unfortunately no, as a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate (LPCC) in the state of Colorado, I am only authorized to work with clients currently living in Colorado.

What is the rate?

My rate is $140 for a 5o minute session. Limited sliding scale options are available for those who qualify.  In the state of Colorado, you have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost under the No Surprises Act.

Do you accept health insurance?

Unfortunately no, I am not able to accept health insurance plans at this time. However, your insurance company might cover my services as an out-of-network provider. If you use out-of-network coverage you must pay my cash-pay rate. In this case, I would provide an itemized bill for services, also referred to as a “Superbill”, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement each month. You are personally responsible for confirming your out-of-network benefits before we start working together.

Here are questions to ask your health insurance company to determine your benefits:

  • Does my plan include out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • Can I use my out-of-network benefits to work with a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate in the state of Colorado?
  • Does my plan cover Telehealth services?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible?
  • Is there a limit to the number of sessions my plan will cover per year, out-of-network?
  • How much does my plan cover?
  • Does my plan require pre-authorization for counseling services?
  • How do I submit a claim for reimbursement?
  • Can I get a name and reference number for this call?
How soon can I start therapy?

I am currently accepting clients and do not have a waitlist. If you quality for services, you can expect to start therapy typically within 1-week after requesting an appointment and completing the intake documents depending on availability and holiday scheduling.

When are appointments available?

I currently offer Telehealth sessions Monday through Friday between 9am-6pm. On Tuesdays I offer in-person therapy sessions at the Umbrella Collective Office in Boulder.

Therapy Approaches

I use an integrative and holistic approach to talk-therapy, meaning that I incorporate a blend of elements from multiple counseling theories and therapy modalities to treat and support your whole complex self – mind, body and spirit. The counseling theories below are the ones that most heavily influence my practice.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic Theory explores unconscious processes, unresolved conflicts, and past relationships to increase client self-awareness and understanding. Engaging in psychodynamic therapy will help you uncover unconscious motivations, biases and social patterns that lead to self-defeating or unwanted behavior. Developing an understanding of your unconscious emotions will enhance your relationships by increasing trust and deepening connection with the people in your life.

Somatic Therapy

Somatic therapy is a form of body-centered therapy that focuses on the interconnectedness of your mind and body. Somatic therapy is based on the foundational principle that trauma, stress, and unresolved emotions are stored or stuck in your body. By bringing awareness to your bodily sensations or pain, trapped emotions and trauma can be released from your body to promote healing both physically and mentally.

Person Centered Therapy

Person-centered therapy posits all individuals have growth potential and are motivated towards self-actualization. In other words, the client (not the therapist) is ultimately the expert on their own life and has the capacity to identify for themselves what they need to heal, change and thrive. The three (3) core tenants of Person-centered therapy are: acceptance without judgement, empathy and a genuine therapeutic relationship. In Person-centered therapy, the therapist’s role is to create a non-judgmental space for self-exploration and consciousness raising, trusting that the best solutions always come from within the client.
